Tuscaloosa was the capital of Alabama from 1826 until 1846, when the legislature voted to move it to Montgomery. A fire destroyed the old Tuscaloosa capitol building in 1923, leaving only sections of wall and broken columns. Credit goes to Encyclopedia of Alabama
